To the Mother in the Coffee Shop

Mama,

I see you.

You have your hair up.

You’re wearing

comfortable

clothes,

(I even see the

Goldfish crumb

stuck to your back)

but you make it look like

high fashion.

You set down

your bag,

and you get in line

to order that

latte.

And your son

starts running around.

Before you make your order,

you take time to connect

with him.

You set your

expectations,

and you make sure

he has what he needs.

And I’m impressed.

He is such a sweet boy.

He waves at me

from his seat.

But it’s so hard

to sit still.

He is so eager

to be with you,

Mama.

He shares his toy car with you.

He shares a hug with you.

He shares his thoughts,

feelings, and cares with you.

You have work to do,

and you make time

for him.

I see you,

Mama,

and

I honor you.
